How to Help
Friendship Teams

"In as much as you have done it unto one of the least of these, you have done it unto me."

The friendship teams coordinated by A Helping Hand/Orphanvoice and it's orphan relief partners are designed to minister to children, but more importantly minister to those seeing the world through the eyes of a child starving...for love, food, or friendship. These trips are designed for individuals with strong personal consitiutions...they are not for the weak in Spirit. If you are interested in learning more about these options for 2007 please visit the orphanvoice website.

Xiamen, the second largest city in Fujian Province next to the capital Fuzhou, covers a total area of 1,516 square meters. As one of the five earliest special economic zones, with heavy investment from Taiwan and Hong Kong, it has been a city growing in strength. Despite its fame as an industrial powerhouse, this port city has not lost much of its charm, and as a sightseeing heaven, has become one of the best areas to visit in Fujian and for good reason: With good food, some great architectures and a mild to hot climate, Xiamen is hard to resist.

DAY 12

Xiamen, known in the West as Amoy, has long been an important trading port both for the Chinese and the Colonialists that were to make use of it. It is the island of Gulangyu, however, that nowadays most attracts Westerners to this area of Fujian, with its hundreds of interesting and quietly crumbling colonial villas. For the Chinese, one of the main reasons for visiting this isle is to pay homage to the great general and pirate Koxinga, who led heavy resistance against the invading Manchu armies in the seventeenth century, and who fought and defeated the Dutch armies in Taiwan. Tributes to Koxinga are scattered all about the island, including the majestic granite statue of him, staring out towards Taiwan.

The Forbidden City (Zijincheng)(also known as the Imperial Palace (Gugong) and the Palace Museum) is the largest and best preserved collection of ancient buildings in China. This site is an image of China relayed throughout the world on national days and at public events. Today, the Palace is filled with tourists but under the emperors, these "commoners" would have been executed had they dared to enter the complex! Given the popularity of the site, the Chinese government has invested a lot of time and money in the Palace and it is now a fantastic place to wander and dream of times gone by.

The Great Wall (Changcheng), totaling more than 12,000 kilometers, is arguably the most famous image of China throughout the world. It is the only man made object visible from the moon, and as one of the Eight Wonders of the world, the Great Wall of China lives up to its reputation.

The Summer Palace (Yiheyuan) is a magnificent imperialgarden located 12 km north-west of Beijing City. This is the largest ancient preserved garden in China and a former summer retreat for Emperors and the chosen few! The site includes more than 100 ancient style pavilions, mansions, towers, halls, temples, bridges and an enormous clear water lake. What is most enjoyable about the Summer Palace is that it is simply a gorgeous place to relax, escape the smoke and crowds of the city and spend an afternoon walking. That said, however, one could just as easily spend one week out here as one afternoon! Given the sheer size of the place (occupying an area of 290 acres) the Summer Palace is as vast as it is spectacular. This is great though, as it means you get a rare chance in Beijing-- to lose the crowds and clear the cobwebs from your mind!
