Our Families
The Mason Family

We visited Abbie in August of 2005 for a long weekend. We took our two boys (ages 8 and 11). It was a great time for us all. The staff of God Bless the Children were wonderful! We can't say enough good things about Ana Maria. She was very accommodating to us and called us at least once a day to ask how we were doing or arrange a sightseeing trip.

When we arranged our trip to Guatemala to pick Abbie up at the end of October, Ana Maria was again very helpful. She always went out of her way to make us comfortable and see that we were taken care of. She even offered to take us to church on Sunday. Unfortunately, she was not able to go at the last minute due to a family emergency. She arranged to have someone from her staff take us there and sit with us. We really enjoyed church in Guatemala. It was a great experience!

We had Abbie for 9 days in Guatemala. Since our Power of Attorney was out of the country, we had to go to Guatemala and get Abbie's passport before the Embassy would let us know when our visa appointment would take place. Ana Maria took care of us and drove us wherever we needed to go. After Abbie's foster mom and dad gave her to us on Monday morning the 24th, Abbie's birthday, it was a very hard transition day for her. We found out that Abbie was her foster parents' first foster child and they had a very hard time saying goodbye to her. We all hugged for a long time and cried. We plan to see them again next summer if they can come to Kentucky for the agency's adoption reunion. Abbie had a very hard day grieving for her foster family. We just held her and comforted her as best we could.

The next several days were much better as her bubbly personality started to emerge. She has lots of smiles and like to imitate what she sees us do. We went to get her Guatemalan Passport and Visa picture on Tuesday. She had her exit Embassy Pediatrician check-up on Wednesday. She got a clean bill of health. Our US Embassy Visa appointment was on Friday. It was a 3-hour wait for a 5-minute "interview." We had to wait until Monday for the actual visa to be ready. We spent the weekend at the Guatemala City Zoo (very nice and clean--we highly recommend it) and church on Sunday with some of the staff of God Bless the Children. We were able to walk around the city some and on Monday, we went on a tour of Antigua. We also toured a small coffee plantation, textile factory, and St. Peter's Basilica. It was a blessing looking back at the time we spent--just the 3 of us. It was a good bonding time for us. She adjusted extremely well once we got home to the boys.

We are thankful and feel so blessed to have Abbie in our family! Praise God for this wonderful blessing to us! We are in touch with Abbie's foster sisters (the Ewings) and plan to keep them in touch with each other since they only live 30 minutes away from us.
